Overview |
The basic concept of a central heating system dates back to Roman Times, to put in bluntly it’s just moving heated water from a heat source.
Central heating systems have advanced remarkably since then.
There are three common types of system: |
The Gravity Hot Water Pumped System |
This system, by today’s standards is the least efficient. It relies on the upward flow of hot water to circulate heated water a boiler through a system of pipes to a hot water cylinder. This is known as ‘gravity’. When water is heated it expands and actually becomes lighter, as the cooler water sinks it naturally pushes up the warmer water. When a pump is added it can heat radiators in the rooms of your home. |
Fully Pumped System |
This is commonly known as the ‘Y’ plan system. By means of external controls the mid position diverter valve controls the flow around the primary hot water and heating circuit, this enables the householder to independantatley control each circuit or at the same time. |

Combi Boiler |
The combination boiler is now a widely chosen system due to the space saving aspect of it. The system requires no tanks in loft space and no hot water cylinder in airing cupboard. Combining this concept with a high-efficiency combi significant savings can be made.
Furthermore, how water is delivered at mains pressure and you never have to wait to heat that cylinder again for hot water! Also due to the natural scaled down plumbing involved heating boasts better performance and efficiency. |

Boiler Servicing - The Facts |
- People die each year through incorrectly installed and faulty gas appliances, which are never checked.
- Regular servicing improves the efficiency of the appliance.
- Regular servicing reduces the risk of costly breakdowns.
Procedure |
Gas appliances are serviced and maintained in accordance with manufactures instructions.
Many modern day boilers can be safety checked with an analyzer.
This is a device which can determine both efficiency and any potential dangers present.
However older convential boller, i.e back boilers and open flued appliances are to be checked much more thoroughly. These appliances should be stripped and down and professionally cleaned.
Also during a rountine service a gas leakage test of not just the appliance but the whole gas installation is carried out.
RJS Heating Ltd offer a non-contract annual service cost of £65.00+VAT to carry out a service procedure from an old style boiler to a up to date condensing boiler. As part of our service check list, we provide every customer with a black-spot carbon monoxide detector; these are reasonable measure to ensure gas safety. However, we highly recommend the battery audible carbon monoxide detectors which are available for purchase through RJS Heating Ltd.
If you are a landlord, you must by Law have your gas appliances checked annually and certified. RJS Heating Ltd offer this service for £69.00 + VAT

Landlord Safety Certificate |
Landlords have a legal duty to maintain all gas appliances and flues, which are provided for tenants for use in the properties. They must be checked for safety at least once every 12 months by a Corgi registered installer.
If you are a landlord with your gas appliances unchecked, call us today for your Landlords Gas Safety Certificate (CP 12) or get a quote and book online.

PowerFlushing |
What is Powerflushing?
Corrosion within central Heating system accounts for 60-70% of boiler breakdowns.
Powerflushing is the most effective cleansing method , the concept is simply to remove these debris , limescale and corrosion by connecting a power flush machine via the boiler or radiator pipework.
When combined with a suitable chemical cleanser a Powerflush normally takes a maximum of 6 hours. |
Other benefits for Powerflushing include:
- As your central system is now clean, you can expect reduced energy bills, due to the boiler heating the system effectively.
- Our customers have noticed their systems working much quieter.
- As there is no more black sediment in the radiators, cold spots are ililminated.
- Radiators do not require frequent venting. This is normally blamed on hydrogen been present in the radiators.
- Once the Powerflush is competed we dose the system with an inhibitor which prevents future build up of corrosion.
If you believe your system would benefit from a Powerflush, we would visit your home and carry out a simple ph test of the water circulating in your central heating system to determine the level of corrosion.
